Salon Skills NCEA Vocational Pathways Level 2

The Salon Skills NCEA Vocational Pathways Level 2 programme is aimed at learners who have not yet obtained their NCEA Level 2 qualification at school and who wish to progress to a career in hairdressing, barbering, or makeup and skincare.

Students will not be able to enrol in any level 3 hairdressing, barbering, or makeup and skincare qualification unless they have already achieved NCEA Level 2. Therefore, this programme assists learners to achieve NCEA Level 2 in an exciting environment gaining skill and knowledge in their chosen field of interest.

This programme will cover both theory and practical skills where you will work on clients in our beauty space, hair salon, or barbershop as well as being involved in barber or hairdressing competitions, community events, and photoshoots.

All course content is delivered face to face on-site at BHB Academy where we operate from a purpose-built, fully equipped space that runs commercially for authentic assessment situations.

Students are taught by award-winning tutors who are passionate about teaching.

This programme runs anywhere from 20 – 26 weeks depending on the enrolling students existing record of learning. This will be discussed with you in your interview when enrolling.

Career Opportunities

Once you have completed the Salon Skills NCEA Vocational Pathways Level 2 programme you can then apply to enroll in the following courses BHB offers:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support) Level 3
  • New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4
  • New Zealand Certificate in Makeup and Skincare Level 3

Entry Criteria

Applicants must be 16 years or over at the time of commencing study or 15 (with school exemption)

Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 5.5 (with no score below 5.0) or equivalent. Enrolment is subject to approval by the directors.

A passion for either hairdressing, barbering, or makeup and skincare, and the commitment to complete the NCEA Level 2 programme is essential.

You must also be able to meet all enrolment requirements as stated in the Enrolment Guide.

Course Duration and Hours

This course is 20 – 26 continuous weeks (depending on exiting record of learning)

HOURS:

Tuesday               9:00am – 4:00pm

Wednesday         9:00am – 4:00pm

Thursday             9:00am – 4:00pm

Friday                  9:00am – 4:00pm

Monday is a self-directed study day used for projects and assignments

 

Course holiday breaks

BHB Academy follows the Ministry of Education school term and holiday breaks.

NB:  Except for the October holidays where one week’s holiday is taken only (the first week). This is due to our early finish in December so as to accommodate student’s employment in salons, barbershops, or makeup counters.

Fees Schedule 2024

Fees:                     $0.00

This programme is funded under the Youth Guarantee FEES FREE scheme. All students are also eligible for travel allowance to assist them in getting to the course each day.

Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible for student allowances. This must be applied for through Study Link.

2024 Intakes

You can start this programme at any time during the year. Your start date will need to be agreed upon during your enrolment interview.

You will hear back from a member of the enrolment team to schedule an interview time. Having support around you is important so we encourage parents/support people to attend this interview with you. A parent or legal guardian will need to be available to sign your enrolment and any other forms BHB requires of you.

BHB Academy may then present you with a letter of offer to pursue study in the Salon skills NCEA VP Level 2 programme.

You will also be sent further enrolment documentation to read through, including forms you need to fill in, sign, and return to BHB Academy as part of your enrolment requirements. These will be sent to you via email.

Withdrawal Procedure

If you wish to withdraw from a course you are required to do so in writing by filling in a Change of details/circumstances form, email salina@bhbacademy.ac.nz to request this form.  You are required to do this within the refund period of 8 calendar days after the course commencement.
